The Early Years

I’ve been sewing since high school, starting with red, white and blue hip-hugger bell bottoms, then to Betsey Johnson blouses, and finally tailoring suits and dresses. The rest of my youth was taken up with knitting, rug hooking, barjello, spinning and weaving.

I began quilting in 1985, making a group quilt with my family for our grandmother. For the next 12 years, I did hand piecing, hand appliqué and hand quilting. No wonder I finished one quilt every three years!

This is the center of my son’s quilt. I've learned so much since then, but still love this quilt!

My Guild

Moving to Washington brought me to Busy Bee Quilters Guild ( and the concept of quilting with my sewing machine. Since then, I have worked on hundreds of quilts. Being part of a guild is a treasure: it provides teachers and friends, sources of equipment and fabric, inspiration, support and laughter. I recommend it to everyone. Your quilting skills can only improve by interacting with other quilters. Plus, your stash may grow—you know you need more fabric and thread.

A New Leaf

I started Artichoke Quilts in September 2005, when my love of quilting got the best of me and became a full-time occupation (or is that obsession?). I have finished more than 100 quilts for clients, many of whom have come back for more help. I love this work. I am a creative person, and I enjoy getting things finished.

While it is hard to discuss patterns abstractly, I am very good at seeing an appropriate design for your quilt. Usually, we work together, starting with these questions:

  • Traditional or contemporary?
  • Stitching all-over, in segments, or blocks?
  • Matching or complimentary thread colors?

Then the fun starts!

So, let's talk.
